KAH’s Prospect Street duplex is move-in ready

CHESTERTOWN — Kent Attainable Housing hosted an open house and ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony June 17 at its Prospect Street duplex.

The newly completed homes are identical, each consisting of three bedrooms and two full bathrooms with an open floor plan of a living room, dining room, and kitchen.

The new homeowners — identified as young couples, one with a child — were expected to finalize settlement this week and move in by July 1, according to Kent Attainable Housing Executive Director Kim Righi.

The project was made possible through the support of local, state, and federal grants, private donors, and dedicated local volunteers, Righi said.

Funding partners included the Town of Chestertown with an allocation of American Rescue Plan Act [ARPA] money, Kent County Health Department, ShoreRivers’ River Friendly Yards, Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Neighborhood Revitalization Division, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Project Funding.

At the ribbon cutting, Righi recognized Chestertown Mayor Meghan Efland, representatives from U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s office and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, and volunteers who included Joe Phillips of Phillips & Donovan Architects, Jay Yerkes of Rosin Creek Collaborative, Morris Goldsborough, and John Shorter.

It was about a year ago — May 15, 2025 — that the two modular homes were craned into place in the 100-block of Prospect Street. The set marked the culmination of months of planning, permitting, and community collaboration, and signaled the beginning of the final phase of construction that would include utility hookups, interior finishes, landscaping and inspections.

“These newly completed homes represent a significant milestone in our mission to expand quality, attainable housing opportunities throughout Kent County,” Righi said in a news release.

“This event celebrates more than just the completion of two physical structures; it symbolizes the growing momentum of Kent Attainable Housing,” she said.

The homes at 134 and 136 Prospect Street are the fourth and fifth residences that KAH has shepherded along in Kent County.

“As we honor this achievement,” Righi said of the Prospect Street duplex, “we are also looking ahead to our next affordable housing initiatives within the Butlertown community of Worton.”
